1. In the years around 1824, South Carolina was in a political upheaval because of the protective tariff enacted by the federal government.

2. Civil War was threatening, and some of the forbearers, still adhering to thier Quaker faith, which disallowed war, began to leave the state..

3. Joseph and his wife Rosanna Nichols came to Georgia from their farm with a big old house with outside
kitchen...in Laurens County, South Carolina in 1825 and settled in De Kalb County, later moving to Newton, (Now Rockdale) County.

4. Joseph was one of the Ruling Elders of Smyrna Presbyterian Church in 1827...

3. Gunpowder Copper Works gained a national reputation. This gristmill, which still stands near Harford Road and the Great Gunpowder Falls, was operated by Levi Hollingsworth from 1811 to 1838. During the War of 1812, Gunpowder Copper Works supplied the United States Navy with copper sheathing for ships. Following the war, the plant refined copper from Frederick County mines for the dome of the US Capitol, which had been destroyed by he British. Hollingsworth's dome lasted until the expansion of the Capitol in the 1860's. Today, the Gunpowder watershed is primarily known for its winding trails, abundant trout, and good rapids for inner tubing.
