Joel Otho BARTLETT


Otho moved to Holdenville as a youth in 1927. He and his wife, Carmen,operated Bartlett's Coffee Shop between 1936 and 1961.
During World War II, Otho served as Ship's Cook 3rd Class aboard the Navytransport ship, U. S. S. General W. C. Langfitt, and was dischargedOctober 17, 1945. In 1963, Otho was elected Mayor of Holdenville, andwas re-elected three times, serving until 1971. Otho spearheaded thecity's first million-dollar project, construction of Holdenville GeneralHospital. Also during his tenure, Kingsberry came to Holdenville, thecity built the railroad spur, and a modern street lighting system wasinstalled.
He was appointed to the City Council in 1987, and was re-elected to theCouncil in 1991. He has also served Holdenville and Hughes Countythrough the Chamber of Commerce and the Election Board. He remainedactive in Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church. He was active inRotary International, the American Legion, and also earned the De MolayLegion of Honor Award.
Funeral was at the Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church.
At the time of Otho's death, he had 6 great grandchildren. He had 2step children, 3 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.
