2. Noah was captured at the Battle of Missonary Ridge, near Chatamooga, Tennessee on 25 Nov 1863. He was sent to Louisville, Kentucky to be exchanged in a prisoner of war swap. However, rather than be exchanged, Noah apparently decided not to return to the Confederate Army. Instead, at the end of December he was sent to Rock Isle, Illinois, site of a large prisoner of war camp.

3. On 5 Feb 1864 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Often, Confederate prisoners who did not wish to be paroled back to the Confederate Army were offered a choice: join the federal army and serve in the West against the Indians, enlist in the U.S. Navy, or remain in a prisoner of war camp. Many elected to serve in the U.S. Navy, particularly as they were promised they would not have to fight against their Southern countrymen.

4. In the same unit as Noah was his brother, Matthew Abbott, from Tuscaloosa County.
