1. OBITUARY Vernon McMinn Jr. , 64
Vernon McMinn Jr., 64, of Fletcher, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 3, 1999, in his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Henderson County, and a son of the late Vernon McMinn and Thelma McMinn. He was a graduate of the former Fletcher High School and of the Baptist faith. He was a machinist at Sayles Bleachery for 30 years and a millwright at Cranston Print Works for two and a half years, retiring in 1993.
He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving for four years, and received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was an outdoorsman who loved to fish and cut wood, and was also a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Claudia Mae Baldwin McMinn; a son, Michael McMinn and his wife, Roxanne, of Fletcher; two daughters, Debbie Huntley and her husband, Jay, of Fairview, and Cindy McMinn of the home; five grandchildren, Kevin Worsham, Tyler Huntley, Josh McMinn, Tabitha McMinn and Michaela McMinn; three great-grandchildren, Trent, Terri and Shelby Worsham; two brothers and their wives, Buddy McMinn and his wife, JoAnn, of Fletcher, and Calvin McMinn and his wife, Marie, of Hendersonville; six sisters, Jane Peek and her husband, Jurior, Ruth Baker and her husband, Don, of Fletcher, Phyllis Whitaker and her husband, Ted, of Fairview, and Camie Robles and her husband, Robert, of Hendersonville; a brother-in-law, Weldon Baldwin of Fletcher; two sisters-in-law, Mary June Looney of Arden and Dorothy Golden of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oak Forest Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Magnet, Paul B. Chandler Jr., Hugh McMinn and Lawrence Rhodes will officiate. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors, and at other times will be at the home.
