William, along with his brother Martin and Leroy Pence, the father of his future wife, joined the Confederate Army in Dalton, Georgia as a private in Company "F" 60th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Evans Brigade, Gordon Div, Army of North Virginia, CSS. The men of Company F fought many battles among which were the Battle of Antietam Creek and the Battle of Sharpsburg in September 1862. In 1863 they went through Chancellorsville, Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
5. According to his Army records he as a member of the Sharp Shooter Battalion.
6. He was a resident of Mountain Towns, Gilmer County, Georgia, and across from the home-place, he ran a grist mill on Mountain Town Creek, not only grinding corn, but making syrup as well.
7. On 8 Oct 1864 he was described as follows: 5' l0" tall, fair complexioned, sandy hair and blue eyes, moustache.
8. Toward the end of the war William was captured near Petersburg, Virginia and transferred as a Prisoner of War to City Point, Virginia. Private DeFoor contracted smallpox in prison, which, permanently impaired his eyesight. After being in the hospital for smallpox at Point Lookout, Maryland from April to June of 1865, he was mustered out of the Army on 29 Jun 1865.
9. He applied for a pension in 1905, but no record where he ever received it.
10. After the war, he returned to Gilmer County where he married Mary Ann Oliphant Pence. She died 9 Jul 1907 and is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
