Charles Magness, 71

Charles "Cotton" Magness, 71, of Hendersonville died Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at the Elizabeth House following a short illness.

A native and lifelong reesident of Henderson County, he was the son of the late Clifton O. Magness and Emma Kuykendall Magness. He was a Korean War veteran who served with the Army. He was a retired salesman, and a member of East Flat Rock First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and was on several committees within the church.

Cotton enjoyed working in the area of benevolence. He was a charter member and past president of the Fl;at Rock Lion's Club and a current member of the Hendersonville Day Break Lion's Club. He had 37 years of 100% attendance with the area Lions' Clubs and was a Melvin Jones and Jack Stickley Followship recipient. He served many positions within both the Lion's District 31-A and the state levels. He was past Deuputy District Governor for the Lion's Club and served on the Board of Directors of the WNC Lion's Inc.Marjorie McCune Memorial Center in Black Mountain. He was a member of the Kedron Lodge 387 AF & AM. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies, Valley of Asheville.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Audrey McMinn Magness; a brother Steven M. Magness and his wife, Audrey G. Magness, of Canton, Ga.; a nephew, Matthew T. Magness; and a niece Katie L. Magness, both of Canton, Ga.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 Thursday at East Flat Rock First Baptist Church. The Revs. Jimmy Tarrant, Harold McKinnish, and FrankTantillo and District Governor of Lion's Club District 31-A Paul Vaughan will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church and at other times will be at the residence. A committal service will be held at 3 p.m.Thursday at Shephered Memorial Park. The Rev. Bill Landreth will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by ubert M. Smith, American Legion Post 77; Hedrick-Rhodes, VFS Post 5206; and Chapter 14 of the DAV.

1. James was in the Civil War and was shot in the jaw & tongue...causing him to have problems saying some words like the town of Corsicana.

2. His tombstone has Masonic Emblem at the top...with inscription reading: "Our Father has gone to a mansion of rest, To the glorious land by the Daily Blest".
