1. Sometime during 1850 R.W.H. McMinn and his family joined up with friends and relatives to form a covered wagon caravan, searching for greener pastures in the pioneering state of Texas. In single file, extending a mile or more from lead wagon to rear, each loaded down with household goods, various tools and farming equipment. Milk cows tied to the tail gate and chicken coops lashed to the sideboards. This caravan traveled maybe 30 miles a day if lucky. Traveling over unimproved roads, stopping by the roadside at night, sleeping under the stars, meals cooked on an open wood fire set up on the ground, washing clothes and bathing in little streams along the way. In case of rain, the caravan had to stop because of muddy roads and high water in the creeks that had no bridges. After several very tiresome weeks the caravan arrived in East Texas where the McMinn family and others settled in the little community of Old Birmingham located in Cherokee, County, Texas.
