Bertha Melinda MC MINN

1. MEMORIES OF AUNT BERTHA
by: Ann Watkins

Nestled among the huge walnut trees, along the side of a country road still stands the more than 100 year old home of the Oscar Stepp family. Just by visiting the home, a person can tell the great love that has kept the old home standing for so many years.

The Watkins children have many happy memories of visiting with Aunt Bertha and her family and eating meals with them. Some of the most enjoyable times are times they spent with Aunt Bertha and ate white northern beans and potato chips! Good homemade buscuits were always on the table if someone had a hankering for bisucits with jelly or even a good ripe tomato and biscuit if the season was right!

Listening to the tick-tock of the big alarm clock always kept the children occupied. Many happy hours have been spent sitting around the fire cracking walnuts picked up in the front yard. The chocolate fudge with walnuts that Alma made for you can still make your mouth water! Getting to lick the beaters and pan after a good coconut cake was baked was a special treat.

We never let an Easter go by that we didn't hide Easter eggs in Aunt Bertha's yard.

Melinda has always felt just a little bit special since she was named Melinda in honor of Aunt Bertha.

Aunt Bertha was always available to give motherly advice or spiritual guidance. After discussing a problem with Aunt Bertha, her guidance was usally taken and many problems were solved.

She always took an active part in helping to run the affairs of Locust Grove Baptist Church as an unseen adviser. Any time you felt like you needed a friendly chat, a good homecooked meal, some advice, or even juat a little extra love, you knew you had to make to trip to see Aunt Bertha!!!
