8. Memories by Stella McMinn Corbett

Mother and Dad lived in a little house up the hollow from Lewis Ward's on Harper Road when I was born. Mother always said it was so far back in the woods it got dark at 4 o'clock in the evening. When she found a snake in the house, she told Dad she was leaving (one of them had to go). Dad built a cabin below Frank Sargents so they moved into it. It was there that Dad carried me and went to church at Locust Grove around 1907.
Years later Dad sold the cabin to his brother Albert McMinn and wife Grace.
When I grew up I moved away from there and stayed gone several years. When I came back I didn't know how to get to Mother and Dad's house, so I stopped at Uncle Johnny Clingenpeel's and Betty was there. She must have been about 10 years old. She walked and came to show me where my parents lived. They lived in the log cabin in the curve before you got to Glenn McMinn's. I've always loved Betty for this and that's been over 50 years ago.
In the late 40's [probably 50's]I moved back to Henderson County. My Dad didn't drive, so he bought a car and gave it to me to take him and Mother places sometime in the late 50's. I brought them to church at Locust Grove every Sunday. Dad always loved to come to church and to the mountains to see the people he grew up with. He used to say when he died he wanted to be buried on the mountain top. His wish was granted.
Our Sunday School teacher was Eunice Stepp. She was always so sweet and nice. Such a fine lady.
I especially remembber Dan and Marie Blackwell and thought the world of them. They always seemed so full of life and loved us all like family.

William Emil DRAKE

1. FOLKS AT HOME SEND MORE BLOOD
____________

Emil Drake, on Admiralty Islands, South Pacific
Writes in A Serious Strain

____________

Here is a letter that makes one think; one that is written more in a serious strain than are the others; written by Emil W. Drake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willim S. Drake of 103 West Thrid street who is somewhere on the Admirality Islands, not far north of New Guina, where the horrors of war are known to all our boys who have landed in that spot in the South Pacific: Admiralty Islands.

Dear Pastor and Friends:
Tonight our Island is quiet and peaceful. The smoke of the battle has drifted on. It is truly time to think of our home, church and friends. Many a silent promise was made. If only we have the strength to keep {cannot read}(courage ?).
Your encouraging letters have done a world of good. Once in a while we allow ourselves the luxury of reminiscing and among the most .....sant (?) memories are those of the church and my class of boys. Most of them are now in the service.
It seems that every day in some way an incident will happen to make us church conscious. On one occasion a Chaplain of our Division, having been wounded and losing blood fast, refused medical aid until the wounded men around him received treatment.
We also know that you folks at home are doing all you can. The blood you have given to the blood bank is helping to save lives all over the world. It is dropped from planes; carried on the backs of natives. There isn't a place too remote for the plasma to reach. Your blood goes into action with the men.
I want to extend my sympathy to the families that have lost sons and husbands. I want them to know we are dealing with ----------------------justice------------can. Justice that more than retaliates for the treachery and ruthlessness of the enemy.
Once more we are proving to the world that on the historical day, July 4, 1776, the American people were not bluffing when they closed that great document with these immortal words, "And for the support of this declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other, out lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor".
Thanks a lot Rev. Chalfant, for the kind letters and I wish your Independence Day Service all the success in the world.
Good luck and God Bless you all.

Sincerely
Emil W. Drake
