My Grannie Becky moved to Huckleberry Mountain from Green County, Tennessee in 1890. Volly Hill was there and told her Father about land here for sale. Her sister, Seleda [Sleta], said they all came on a train to Hendersonville where Mr. Hill met them and they stayed with him until they could make other arrangements. Her Father, Genio, brought what he could haul of household goods on a big wagon over the mountains.
Grannie went to Green Mountain School and Church near Fruitland. When she married Grandpa John they lived right below her folks. They lived several places. When they settled beyond the Locust Grove Church, Grandpa was overseer of the Baldwin place in the mountains, which later Youngbloods bought. His sons, Jesse and Walt bought land from Mr. Baldwin for him. At first they lived in an old log house but later built a fine one. Grady, Effie and Jesse, thier children, lived nearby.
I went to singings with Grannie at her brother, John Clingenpeel's. L. K. Moore played the organ there. I went to ice cream socials at the camp with her. I remember going to John Maxwell's birthday part with her. Some one there sung, "There is an old and faded picture on the wall". Grannie sung in a high nasal sound. I would go after the cows to the tops of the high mountains and hunt pine knots with her.
The thing I remember most was Grannie's house, especially the kitchen. The house had five rooms. There was a double fireplace. One in the front room and one in the dining room, but she also had a wood burning cook stove.
In the kitchen, Granpa made a walnut harvest table with a separate bench in back. Straight oak bottomed chairs were on the other side. There were two oil lamps with clear glass globes and decorated bases on the table.
On the table was where she made biscuits in a buckeye dough tray about nineteen inches long. Also, it was where she made mill-ground corn bread. She had a homemade round sifter, that she used to sift the meal and flour. There was a fine buffet that belonged to Grandpa's Mother, Grannie kept her eggs in. A wash stand stood beside the back door and a granite water bucket, with a steel wire bail and handle. An enamel wash pan and soap dish sat on a stand at the back door. Running water was just outside the door piped from Ogney Spring, but there was no faucet. A nail beside the door held the drying towel made from a soft flour sack. Nearby was a red oil lantern. A handmade broom stood in the corner. Between the back door and cook stove was a coffee grinder on the wall. On the cook stove were irons, a coffee pot and regular pots. Bread pans stayed in the oven. A pantry was on one end next to the fireplace where canned goods were kept. She had wooden barrels of flour and meal sitting around and a cold pack speckled pot. Fifteen gallon crock jars were for pickles. Several churns stood about. Jars of molasses and pure mountain honey had their place. Dried peppers, leather britches and herbs were hanging aroung the room. At the dining room fireplace was a ten quart Dutch oven, where she cooked a pone of corn bread with coals on the lid. A stewing pot with legs, a round bottom kettle and a huge frying pan were on the hearth and hung on nails beside the fireplace. There was a tripod and a chain for hanging pots. You know, I can remember all this and can not for the life of me remember where she kept her dishes.
